Our Commitment

At the Inn on the Moor Hotel, we recognise that our location within the beautiful North York Moors brings both a privilege and a responsibility.

As an independent, family-run country hotel, we are committed to operating in a way that protects the natural environment, supports our local community, values our team, and ensures that future generations can continue to enjoy the unique character of Goathland and the surrounding area.

We understand that sustainability is a continual journey rather than a fixed destination, and we are committed to making meaningful, measurable improvements over time. 

Our Approach

As a family-run hotel with deep roots in Goathland and the North York Moors, we believe sustainability is about caring for the landscape, supporting our local community and making thoughtful decisions that positively shape the future of tourism in this special part of Yorkshire. We are committed to continuous improvement through practical, realistic actions that help protect the character of the moors while creating a warm, meaningful and responsible guest experience.

Rooted in Goathland

The North York Moors has been home to our family for generations, and that connection to the area remains at the heart of the Inn on the Moor today. Alongside the hotel, our family has also farmed in Goathland for five generations, giving us a deep appreciation for the landscape, the changing seasons and the local community that surrounds us.

Growing up and working on the land has shaped the way we think about hospitality, community and caring for the environment around us. It has taught us the importance of looking after special places, supporting local businesses and appreciating the slower pace of life that makes this part of Yorkshire so unique.

We hope that connection to the moors is something guests feel during their stay too. Whether that’s through the warmth of the welcome, our local knowledge or simply the chance to slow down, switch off and enjoy the beauty of the North York Moors.

What we're doing

Small steps that make a big difference...

From everyday operational changes at the Inn to supporting the wider local community, we are focused on making thoughtful improvements that can have a positive impact over time.

Using refillable products

We're helping to reduce single-use plastic waste by using refillable bathroom products across the hotel wherever possible.

Supporting local suppliers

We're working with local suppliers and businesses where possible to support the local economy and celebrate the best of Yorkshire produce and products.

Recycling across the hotel

We're continuing to improve our recycling practices across the Inn to help reduce waste and encourage more responsible day-to-day operations.

Reducing wasted energy

We're reducing unnecessary energy usage and improve efficiency throughout the hotel such as switching off radiators in unoccupied rooms and having movement sensors for the lights in staff areas and hallways.

Improving accessibility

We're looking at ways we can continue improving accessibility and inclusivity to help make the Inn welcoming and comfortable for as many guests as possible.

Focusing on guest wellbeing

By encouraging guests to slow down, relax and reconnect with nature through a more peaceful and meaningful stay in the North York Moors.

Partnerships & Collaboration

Being part of the North York Moors community means a great deal to us, and we believe that caring for this special area is something best achieved collectively.

We are proud to work with organisations including the North York Moors National Park, VisitEngland and The Travel Foundation, alongside fellow local businesses and tourism partners who share a commitment to responsible tourism and the long-term future of the area.

These partnerships help us continue developing thoughtful, practical improvements while supporting the local economy, community and landscape that make the North York Moors so unique.

Looking Ahead

We know that sustainability is not something that happens overnight, and we also know there is always more we can learn and improve along the way. Rather than trying to do everything at once, we are focused on making thoughtful, practical changes that feel right for both the Inn and the area around us.

To help guide this work, we have developed a formal Climate Action Plan which supports our longer-term goals and helps us continue moving forward in a realistic and structured way.

By continuing to work with local organisations, industry partners and other businesses within the North York Moors, we hope to keep building on the progress already underway and play our part in supporting the future of this special area for generations to come.
